On June 30, the team at The Barista League – who haven't seemed to slow down despite a global pandemic and event lockdown – will launch a brand-new season of Battle of the Beans (formerly The Barista League: Online). Initially created as a response to strict travel restrictions last March, the project has developed into a 12-episode series of never-before-seen barista challenges that play out through episodes on YouTube.
This season will feature two new hosts, Aashifa Hussain (head trainer at Well Grounded in London) & Carolyn West (Director & Producer of the show’s previous two seasons) and four new competitors: Kimia Bergeson (Bremen, Germany), Marissa Childers (Atlanta, Georgia, USA), Addison Mathis (Atlanta, Georgia, USA) and Josh Shirtcliffe (Leicester, UK).
Modern Standard Coffee are delighted to be one of the three coffee roasters providing coffee for this event, alongside Intelligentsia Coffee and Onyx Coffee Lab.
Each week the baristas will complete innovative and creative challenges including brewing espresso without using water, an espresso competition where the judge dials in the espresso, plant-based beverage identification, matching coffees to their cup scores, speed challenges, re-imagined latte art battles and more. These challenges will also feature special guests including Cydni Patterson, Lance Hedrick, Ujae Lee, Morgan Eckroth, Nicole Battefeld and more!
Each new season has been an evolution of the one that came before it. This time it’s all about interaction. We want the audience to feel like they are stepping behind the bar with us. There will be more connection between the competitors, special guests, and judges, and more opportunities to join in from your couch’ says Steve Moloney, Founder of The Barista League.
Alongside each episode, there will be giveaways, challenges for viewers to participate in, and other opportunities to play along. While there’s only four competitors this season, the team at The Barista League has also selected an additional group of season applicants who will have the opportunity to receive some of the same exciting coffees, gear, and challenge prompts.
The season launches on Wednesday, June 30th, and to celebrate the launch, The Barista League will host a giveaway for anyone who follows their YouTube channel before the first episode. More details on the giveaway can be found on their Instagram page
