About coffee origins

Why origin matters

Where a coffee is grown shapes how it tastes. Climate, altitude, soil and the plant varieties farmers grow all leave their mark, and so do the processing traditions in each country. A washed Kenyan coffee and a natural Brazilian can taste like two different drinks.

How to use these guides

Each guide covers a country's coffee history, its main growing regions, when the harvest happens and how coffee is usually harvested and processed there, plus the flavours to expect in the cup. You'll also find the coffees we're roasting from that origin right now.

How we choose our coffees

We buy speciality coffee from single farms, estates and co-operatives, and we pay on average 40% over the Fairtrade minimum price. Every coffee is roasted to order at our roastery in Glenrothes, Fife. Read more about how we source coffee.

Taste the difference yourself

The best way to learn is to taste. Brew two single origin coffees from different continents the same way, side by side, and notice what changes. Our coffee tasting guide shows you what to look for.

Or shop by origin: coffees from Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala and Kenya.
