Good to know
3 kcal
Black coffee is almost calorie-free
A double espresso, an americano or a mug of filter coffee comes in at around 3 to 6 kcal. Nearly all the calories in your cup come from what you add.
95%
Milk does most of the work
In a 12oz semi-skimmed latte, around 95% of the calories come from the milk. Cup size matters more than anything else.
34 kcal
Per pump of syrup
A 10ml pump of a typical coffee syrup is about 34 kcal and 8g of sugar, roughly the same as two teaspoons of sugar.
61 kcal
Oat isn't always lighter
That's per 100ml of a barista oat drink. They're made to foam like dairy, so they sit closer to whole milk (65 kcal) than semi-skimmed (47).
Coffee that tastes sweet on its own
Good speciality coffee has its own natural sweetness, from caramel and chocolate to ripe fruit. Try one of our single origins black and taste what's already in the cup.
How we work this out
We use typical UK values per 100ml: whole milk 65 kcal, semi-skimmed 47 and skimmed 35 (UK dairy figures), Oatly Barista 61, Alpro Soya 42 and Alpro unsweetened almond 14. An espresso shot is about 3 kcal, a 10ml pump of syrup about 34 kcal, a teaspoon of sugar (4g) 16 kcal, and we allow about 90 kcal for the chocolate in a mocha.
We assume cups are filled to about 90%, around 25ml of espresso per shot, and less milk in foamier drinks like cappuccinos. Your café's cups, pour and milk brand will all change the numbers, so treat these as a guide rather than an exact count.
