How to Make a Mocha at Home
Half hot chocolate, half latte. How to make a rich café mocha at home with real chocolate, espresso and silky steamed milk.
In this article
A mocha is the best of both worlds: rich chocolate, a double espresso and silky steamed milk. Made with good chocolate rather than sweet powder, it's a proper treat, and easy to make at home.
What you need
- An espresso machine with a steam wand
- Espresso coffee, such as our Momentum Espresso
- Real hot chocolate, such as our 52% Hot Chocolate
- A 350ml milk jug
- A 10 to 12oz cup
The recipe
- About 20g of hot chocolate (a heaped scoop)
- Double espresso (about 36g)
- About 200ml of steamed milk
Step by step
- Put the chocolate in your cup.
- Pull a double espresso straight onto it. See our espresso guide.
- Stir well until the chocolate has melted into a smooth, glossy paste.
- Steam your milk to 60 to 65°C with a little foam, then pour it in, stirring as you go.
Make it your own
- Orange mocha: add a strip of orange zest to the cup before the espresso.
- Mint mocha: add 10ml of Sweetbird mint syrup.
- Salted caramel mocha: add 10ml of caramel syrup and a pinch of sea salt.
A 12oz mocha with semi-skimmed milk is around 190 kcal, including the chocolate. See how it changes with other milks in our coffee calorie calculator.
