How to Make Hot Chocolate at Home
How to make a rich, proper hot chocolate at home with our 52% Colombian hot chocolate. Dairy free, and easy to make with any milk.
A proper hot chocolate should taste of chocolate, not sugar. Ours is a 52% single origin hot chocolate from a family-run business in Colombia, made with Fino de Aroma cacao and completely dairy free. Here's how to get the most out of it.
What you need
- Our 52% Hot Chocolate (dairy free, made from Colombian Fino de Aroma cacao)
- A milk jug or small pan
The recipe (one mug)
- 25 to 30g of hot chocolate (about two heaped scoops)
- About 250ml of milk
Step by step
- Put the hot chocolate in your mug and add a splash of the hot milk.
- Stir into a smooth, glossy paste with no lumps.
- Heat or steam the rest of the milk to about 65°C, then pour it in slowly, stirring as you go.
Which milk?
- Whole milk gives the richest, creamiest cup.
- Semi-skimmed is lighter but still smooth.
- Oat milk is our favourite dairy-free option. See our vegan hot chocolate.
Flavours to try
- Gingerbread hot chocolate
- Mint hot chocolate
- Salted caramel hot chocolate
- Christmas hot chocolate with all the toppings
Tips
- Make the paste first. It is the secret to a lump-free, glossy hot chocolate.
- Do not boil the milk. Around 65°C keeps it sweet and smooth.
- Want it stronger? Add a few extra grams rather than less milk.
FAQs
Is your hot chocolate dairy free?
Yes. Our 52% Hot Chocolate is dairy free, so with oat or soya milk the whole drink is dairy free.
Can I make it with water?
You can, but milk makes it far creamier. If you use water, use a little more chocolate.
How much hot chocolate should I use?
About 25 to 30g per mug of 250ml milk. Adjust to taste.
A mug made with 28g of hot chocolate and 250ml of semi-skimmed milk is around 250 kcal (about 285 kcal with oat milk and 295 kcal with whole milk). For coffee drinks, see our coffee calorie calculator.
