Dairy free doesn't have to mean second best. Our 52% hot chocolate is dairy free, and with a good oat milk it makes one of the creamiest hot chocolates you'll ever have.

What you need

  • Our 52% Hot Chocolate (dairy free, made from Colombian Fino de Aroma cacao)
  • A milk jug or small pan

The recipe (one mug)

  • 25 to 30g of hot chocolate (about two heaped scoops)
  • About 250ml of milk
  • Use oat milk (barista style foams best)

Step by step

  1. Put the hot chocolate in your mug and add a splash of the hot milk.
  2. Stir into a smooth, glossy paste with no lumps.
  3. Heat or steam the rest of the milk to about 65°C, then pour it in slowly, stirring as you go.

Which plant milk?

  • Oat: naturally sweet and creamy. Our top pick.
  • Soya: high in protein and foams well.
  • Almond: lighter and lower in calories, with a nutty flavour.
  • Coconut: rich and tropical. Lovely with caramel.

See our guide to enjoying coffee dairy free for more.

Tips

  • Barista versions of plant milks are made to heat and foam without splitting.
  • Heat gently. Plant milks can catch more easily than dairy.
  • Top with dairy-free cream to keep it vegan.
