How to Make a Vanilla Latte at Home
The café favourite, made at home: a double espresso, a shot of vanilla syrup and silky steamed milk. Hot and iced versions.
In this article
The vanilla latte is one of the most ordered drinks in UK cafés, and it's easy to make just as well at home. The secret is using the same kind of syrup baristas use, and getting the amount right.
What you need
- An espresso machine with a steam wand
- Espresso coffee, such as our Momentum Espresso
- Sweetbird Vanilla Syrup (or sugar-free vanilla)
- A syrup pump, which gives you a 10ml shot every time
- A 350ml milk jug
The recipe (12oz)
- 10ml vanilla syrup (one pump, or two teaspoons)
- Double espresso (about 36g)
- About 220ml of steamed milk
Step by step
- Add the syrup to your cup.
- Pull a double espresso on top and stir. See our espresso guide.
- Steam your milk to 60 to 65°C with a thin layer of foam and pour it in. Our latte guide covers the milk in detail.
Iced vanilla latte
Stir 10ml of vanilla syrup into a double espresso, fill a tall glass with ice and 200ml of cold milk, then pour the espresso over the top.
Tips
- Start with one pump. A 12oz latte rarely needs more than two.
- Syrup first, then espresso, so it mixes evenly.
- Vanilla is lovely with matcha and hot chocolate too.
One pump of syrup adds about 34 kcal, so a 12oz semi-skimmed vanilla latte is around 150 kcal. Try it in our coffee calorie calculator.
