How to Make a Matcha Latte at Home
A smooth, lump-free matcha latte at home in two minutes: how much matcha, the right water temperature and how to whisk it.
A matcha latte is earthy, smooth and gently energising, and it's easy to make at home once you know two things: how much matcha to use, and never to use boiling water.
What you need
- Zuma Matcha (100% matcha green tea, nothing added)
- A small whisk or milk frother
- Milk of your choice
- Optional: a Sweetbird syrup to sweeten
The recipe
- 1.5g of matcha (about half a teaspoon)
- 30ml of warm water, not boiling
- About 200ml of steamed or warm milk
- Optional: 10ml of syrup
Step by step
- Sift the matcha into your mug. It's the easiest way to avoid lumps.
- Add 30ml of warm water and whisk or froth until smooth, with a light foam on top.
- Stir in a syrup if you like it sweeter.
- Top with steamed or warm milk.
Why not boiling water?
Boiling water scorches matcha and makes it bitter. For a matcha made with water only, aim for 60 to 70°C. Let the kettle stand for a few minutes after it boils.
Flavours to try
- Vanilla matcha latte: 10ml vanilla syrup
- Lavender matcha latte: 10ml lavender syrup
- Gingerbread matcha latte: 10ml gingerbread syrup and a pinch of cinnamon
