Affogato means drowned in Italian. A scoop of cold vanilla ice cream, drowned in hot espresso. Two ingredients, two minutes, and one of the best desserts there is.

What you need

  • Fresh espresso, such as our Momentum Espresso
  • Good vanilla ice cream or gelato
  • A small glass or cup

The recipe (one serving)

  • One or two scoops of vanilla ice cream
  • A single or double espresso

Step by step

  1. Put the glass in the freezer for 10 minutes.
  2. Add the ice cream.
  3. Pull your espresso. See our espresso guide.
  4. Pour it straight over the ice cream and serve right away with a spoon.

Variations

  • Caramel: drizzle 5ml of caramel syrup over the ice cream.
  • Hazelnut: add hazelnut syrup and chopped nuts.
  • Dairy free: use oat or coconut ice cream.

Tips

  • Serve immediately. The contrast of hot and cold is the whole point.
  • A chocolatey espresso works best with vanilla.
  • No machine? Use 30ml of very strong AeroPress coffee.
