How to Make an Oat Milk Latte
How to steam oat milk properly and make a silky dairy-free latte at home.
In this article
Oat milk is the most popular dairy alternative in UK cafés, and for good reason. It is naturally sweet, creamy and steams well. Here's how to get café results at home.
What you need
- An espresso machine with a steam wand
- Espresso coffee, such as our Momentum Espresso
- Barista-style oat milk
- A 350ml milk jug
The recipe (12oz)
- Double espresso (about 36g)
- About 220ml of oat milk
Step by step
- Pull a double espresso into your cup. See our espresso guide.
- Steam the oat milk to 55 to 60°C. Oat milk tastes best slightly cooler than dairy.
- Tap and swirl the jug to make it glossy.
- Pour in a steady stream and finish with latte art.
For the full method, see our latte guide. Add a Sweetbird syrup for a flavoured latte.
Tips
- Barista versions foam far better than standard oat drinks.
- Do not overheat. Above 65°C oat milk can taste cooked.
- Shake the carton before pouring.

Very acidic coffee or overheated milk can cause splitting. Use barista oat milk and keep it under 65°C.

Not always. Oat milk is similar to semi-skimmed. Unsweetened almond is the lowest.
