How to whisk ceremonial matcha

The traditional way brings out its sweetness and creamy foam. A bamboo whisk is ideal, but a milk frother works too.

  1. 1Sift 1.5g of matcha (about half a teaspoon) into a bowl or mug.
  2. 2Add 30ml of warm or cold water.
  3. 3Whisk in a W or M motion until thick and creamy with a fine foam.
  4. 4Top with warm water at 60–70°C for a traditional cup, or steamed milk for a latte.

Tip: never use boiling water. It scorches the matcha and makes it bitter.

Good to know

What makes it ceremonial?

Ceremonial matcha is the brighter, more delicate grade, made to be whisked and enjoyed with water. Zuma's Classic Ceremonial is shade-nurtured for a vibrant cup with natural umami and a gentle sweetness.

How much matcha should I use?

Around 1.5g per drink, about half a teaspoon. Use a little more for a stronger flavour.

Does matcha contain caffeine?

Yes. Matcha is made from green tea leaves, so it contains caffeine.

Should I choose ceremonial or original?

Choose ceremonial if you like your matcha with water or just a little milk. Choose our original matcha for lattes and sweet, iced drinks, where its earthier flavour holds up to milk and syrups.

How should I store it?

Reseal the pouch after use and keep it somewhere cool and dry. For the best flavour, use within six weeks of opening.

Can I buy matcha for my café or office?

Yes. For regular or larger orders, get in touch with our wholesale team.
